GADSDEN CO., FL – A 14-year-old Havana boy riding a bicycle on the southbound shoulder of US 27 Saturday morning died after a car traveling in the outside southbound lane ran off the road and struck him.
According to the FHP report, the young teen – who was wearing a helmet – was southbound at 9:44 a.m. on May 16 when the crash occurred. The collision happened near John Yawn Place.
A 22-year-old woman from Jonesboro, AR, was behind the wheel of the Infiniti Q50 car that hit him, according to FHP.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Carrie Sue Widick (pictured), fled the scene after the collision.
The young boy was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Leon County deputies later caught up with the driver, who was then turned over to FHP.
The driver was taken into custody on several charges, including hit and run, failure to remain at a crash involving a death and suspected DUI. She is currently being held in the Leon County Jail. FHP Traffic Homicide investigators are continuing to gather evidence in the case.
