BLOUNTSTOWN, FL – Loretha Katrina Baker Jones’ life journey surrendered to Heaven on December 4, 2023, when the Lord called His servant to her great reward.

Loretta, 96,  was the daughter of the late George and Flossie Russ Baker. She was born and raised in Blountstown. As a child, Loretha graduated from Mayhaw School (1st – 12th grades) in Blountstown. She went on to attend Florida Normal College in St. Augustine, where she met David Jones Sr., the love of her life. Later, the school relocated to Miami under the name of Florida Memorial University. She graduated in 1949.

She began her career as an educator, teaching History at Mayhaw High School in the Calhoun County School System. She also taught in Franklin County School System in Apalachicola. While teaching she furthered her education, attending Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University (FAMU) where she received her master’s degree in counseling. She became the guidance counselor for the Calhoun County School System. It was there where she conducted a plethora of job responsibilities including that of writing grants, and overseeing records related to college bound students. She successfully served in the educational field for 48 years.

After retirement she spent much of her time homeschooling, tutoring, and assisting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with their homework. Her retirement years were filled with sharing the beautiful flowers that she grew with family and friends, helping others and loving her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She leaves to celebrate a lifetime of love and precious memories, a devoted family, including her sons: David W. Jones, Jr. (Connie) of Winter Garden;  Eric C. Jones,(deceased) and (Rosalyn) of Tallahassee;  Claude N. Jones (Vivian) of Ocoee;  daughter Claudette A. Pratt (Michael) of Blountstown;  11 grandchildren and  16 great-grandchildren; devoted sisters Ella Mae Gant (Adrian, deceased) of Port St. Joe; Lois Miller (Leon, deceased) of Lynn Haven, Flossie Gautier (James) of  Lynn Haven; Dorothy Mauzy (Bill, deceased) of Jacksonville; devoted brothers Syerenees Baker (Dorothy, deceased) of Tallahassee and Carlton Baker (Jean, deceased) of Lynn Haven, along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, other relatives, and many caring and loving friends.

Services were held at the Blountstown Elementary School auditorium on Dec. 16.  

Arrangements were handled by Vann Funeral Home of Marianna.
