GADSDEN COUNTY – Westbound traffic was backed up to Midway Friday when a motorhome caught fire shortly after 11 a.m. near the Greensboro Exit.
No one was injured in the blaze, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The vehicle was fully engulfed. Emergency workers remained at the scene that afternoon until the motor home could be moved. The westbound traffic was briefly shut down at the 1765-mile marker.
The driver, identified as a 64-year-old man from Marathon, was not hurt.
The RV, which was traveling with an attached trailer, was westbound on I-10 at 11:20 a.m. in the outside lane. When the fire broke out inside the rear of the vehicle, the driver pulled over on the north paved shoulder of the interstate at the 175-mile marker.
He attempted to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher but it was too far out of control, according to the FHP report.
FHP was assisted at the scene by Gretna, Quincy, Midway and Mt. Pleasant Fire Departments.
Motorists traveling between the Greensboro and Tallahassee were delayed until the scene could be cleared.
