JACKSON CO., FL – A collision between a deer and a motorcycle left one man dead after the impact sent the bike into the path of an SUV in the oncoming lane Saturday night.
The fatality was identified as a 40-year-old Malone man.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the black Suzuki motorcycle was traveling south on SR 71, just south of Jasmine Drive, when it struck a deer in the road. The collision pushed the deer, the bike and its rider into the northbound lane into the path of an oncoming Ford SUV at 9:33 p.m.
The SUV hit the motorcycle, the rider and the deer, with pieces of the motorcycle catching fire. The SUV came to a stop in the road.
The five occupants of the SUV were from Gordon, AL. A 22-year-old female passenger and a male passenger, age 40, had minor injuries. The driver, a 23-year-old male, and his two other passengers – an 18-year-old male and a one-year-old girl – escaped injury. All were wearing seat belts.
The crash report noted the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
This fatal crash happened less than 14 hours after a single vehicle crash claimed the life of a 37-year-old Lynn Haven man. A Lynn Haven woman traveling with him, 47, was critically injured. Both were ejected after their vehicle ran off Rocky Creek Road and hit a tree.
