A Thomasville, GA man is charged with grand theft and uttering a forged instrument after he deposited a check into his own account for $2,370.50 that had been mailed from a Calhoun County man to a Valdosta, GA business.

The payment was intended for Reel Steel LLC to cover the costs of a carport.  The victim stated that he mailed the check to the company on Feb. 23 but got a call from them five days later that they had not received the payment.

He contacted his local bank in Blountstown, which found that the check had cleared.  When he received a copy of the check from the bank, he saw that the name of the payee had been changed from Reel Steel LLC to Deryl Jackson, according to Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Garrett Lovelace.  The check was mobile deposited into a Synovus Bank account belonging to Jackson.

Jackson, 26, was arrested and booked into the  Calhoun County Jail on June 26.

Blountstown woman arrested

on 2nd battery charge Saturday

A Blountstown woman was charged with battery after witnesses reported an altercation between her and a relative on her front porch Saturday, July 6.

The dispute became physical after Hali Danielle Smith, 32,  confronted a family member for staying out late, according to a report from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses said the fight started when Smith hit the victim hard on the arm. The confrontation escalated, with punches being thrown and Smith reportedly grabbing the younger family member by the throat.  The deputy’s report noted that both Smith and the victim had noticeable redness around their necks.

Smith acknowledged the two argued but denied there had been an altercation.

Neither the victim or witnesses wanted to file charges but since Smith had previously been earlier convicted on the same charge, she was arrested and charged with committing a second battery following a previous battery conviction.

Woman walking on CR 69 S

swinging golf club arrested

for disorderly intoxication

A 40-year-old Blountstown woman was taken into custody after a worried caller reported seeing her walking along CR 69 South around 5:15 p.m., swinging a golf club and “acting crazy” Saturday, July 6, according to a report from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Two deputies responded and made contact with Vicki Crum, who was described as “obviously intoxicated and smelling strongly of alcohol.”

When asked if she’d had anything to drink that day, she responded that she had “four of the small bottles of blueberry and blackberry 99 cent shots.”  She denied any other alcohol or drug use that would explain her disoriented condition.

The deputies, who are familiar with Crum from previous encounters, urged her to let them take her somewhere safe to get her off the road.  She repeatedly refused before finally asking them to drop her off at a local restaurant.  They declined, and asked if there was a private residence where they could take her.  She told them to drop her off at 14th Street in Blountstown.  When they asked for an address, she became hostile, stating she wasn’t going to tell them because “I’m not a confidential informant or a snitch!”

Unwilling to leave her on the side of a well-traveled county road, the deputies took her into custody on a charge of disorderly intoxication.
