CALHOUN COUNTY, FL – The man killed by a single shot from a small caliber handgun during an argument in a Calhoun County home Thursday evening has been identified as 71-year-old Kevin Jackson.

He died at the scene after being shot once in the upper right chest around 7 p.m. at the home he shared with his wife in the Shuman Ferry Road Community off Hwy. 71, five miles south of Altha.

His wife then called 911 to report that she had shot her husband during a domestic dispute, according to Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Capt. John Scheetz.

“There are no known incidents of domestic violence or abuse between the two,” Scheetz said. “If there were any, it went unreported to law enforcement.”

The captain said he is aware of prior arrests for assaults involving Jackson, “but to my knowledge, he has never been booked into the Calhoun County Jail.” His wife does not have any criminal history.

As of Friday afternoon, the captain said that search warrants have been obtained and “we are sifting through information and data to best determine what happened.”

Jackson and his wife – who has not been charged and is not speaking with investigators at this time – moved to Calhoun County separately, later met in the area and got married in 2013, according to the captain.

Sheriff Glenn Kimbrel said Jackson was a retired over-the-road truck driver. “We’re not exactly sure what we have in this situation,” he said. “We’re taking our time and making sure we get it right.”

It is not known if the victim’s wife has hired an attorney but she did tell the sheriff’s office she would rather have one present before speaking with them.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office as well as FDLE were at the scene most of last night and are continuing to piece together details of what led to the husband’s death.
