Deputies, firefighters and EMS are currently at the scene of a fatal accident involving three vehicles on SR 20 in Calhoun County, near CR 275.
Deputies attempted life-saving measures by pulling a driver from his truck as it caught fire but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was later identified as a 19-year-old man from Clarksville.
The driver of the second vehicle was a 66-year-old Panama City Beach resident who sustained serious injuries.
According to the FHP report, a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup was traveling eastbound when it ran off the wet roadway and onto the grass shoulder. When the driver steered back onto the road, he overcorrected, steering to the left and entering the westbound lane, where a 2016 Toyota 4×4 was approaching.
The Chevrolet hit the right side passenger’s side of the westbound Toyota. Both trucks traveled to the north shoulder of SR 20, where the Chevrolet caught fire. Deputies pulled the driver from the burning truck before it became engulfed but he did not survive.
A third vehicle traveling behind the Toyota was struck by debris. The driver steered to the left to avoid colliding with the two trucks and went into the ditch, causing minor damage to the vehicle.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. CT this afternoon.
FHP Lt. Jason King said, “This is an active investigation and the roadway is still closed at this time.”
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Blountstown Police Department, Carr – Clarksville Fire Department, Westside Fire Department and Calhoun County EMS assisted at the scene.
UPDATE: Lt. King reports that the road has been reopened.
