An Altha man has been charged with the death of his girlfriend and a second man was arrested as an accessory after the fact just 48 hours after the body of Brittney Jordana Dykes, 29, of Wewahitchka, was found in a Calhoun County creek. She was discovered Sunday afternoon, face down on the rocks in the creek under Camp Head Road, wrapped in a sheet, wearing a t-shirt and shorts.
Charles Matthew Gable, 35, is facing a second degree murder charge after relatives of the deceased contacted law enforcement Tuesday evening to report that Gable had admitted killing Dykes and said he was going to kill himself.
Gable was taken into custody last night and waved his rights before giving “a truthful and cooperative statement,” according to a news release from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
The second man, identified as 36-year-old Christopher Edward Vickery, of the Mossy Pond community, “maintains that he simply can’t remember much from that night due to his alcohol-induced amnesia,” the sheriff’s office reported.
Both are being held at the Calhoun County Jail and are awaiting first appearance Thursday morning.
According to a news release, “Relatives provided information to investigators that Dykes, who is from Gulf County, had recently been living with Matt Gable somewhere in Altha, Florida. Relatives also stated that they had been trying to reach Dykes since last speaking with her on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 23, and had knowledge that Dykes and Gable had been involved in an argument.”
Relatives told investigators that Dyke’s three-year-old son was staying with a former babysitter in Grand Ridge. The babysitter alerted authorities Tuesday evening when she learned that Gable was on the way to her home to drop off toys and clothing for child.
Investigators caught up with Gable, seized his vehicle and took him to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, where he initially denied any involvement in the woman’s death during an interview with Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Investigator John Scheetz and Special Agent Travis Lawson. “Gable’s phone was seized and he was transported back to his residence until enough evidence could be obtained to develop probable cause for an arrest,” the new release stated. He later confessed after he was presented with “some incriminating evidence that linked him to the cause of death,” according to Calhoun County Sheriff Glenn Kimbrel.
Agencies taking part in the investigation that led to quick arrests include the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, FDLE, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Gulf County Sheriff’s Office, the Assistant State Attorney’s Office and the Altha Police Department.
“I’m very appreciative of the job everyone did,” said Sheriff Kimbrel. “Several agencies worked non-stop since Sunday and all played different roles to make this case move forward and lead to the arrest of these two men.”
