BRISTOL, FL – The body of a woman who was reported missing on Nov. 30 was found in the woods Wednesday, approximately 800 yards south of her camper trailer at the Bristol boat landing.
A volunteer search and rescue group out of Baldwin County, AL discovered 61-year-old Cathy Rena Terry on the ground next to a log Wednesday, according to Liberty County Sheriff Buddy Money.
In a statement issued Friday morning, the sheriff’s office reported that the remains were taken to the Second Circuit Medical Examiner’s Office, where they were positively identified as Terry’s.
Her cause of death is unknown at this time. Sheriff’s Office Investigator Bobby Revell said the death did not appear suspicious and said it was possible she could have experienced some kind of medical episode. The medical examiner’s office confirmed that there were no signs of physical injury or trauma.
Southern Star Search and Rescue conducted two searches of the area, beginning around the trailer park before moving into the woods along the Apalachicola River. The group initially covered around 60 acres of dense woods, vegetation and swamp land before moving into a 200-acres site in the swamp. The remains were found in a heavily wooded area between Johnson Road and Ramsey Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Four members of the volunteer search group, traveling with two trained human remains detection dogs, made two trips to the area to help investigators locate the missing woman.
The sheriff’s office is planning a chicken pileau fundraiser to help with burial expenses. She had no immediate family living in the area. Her daughter, Regina Lloyd, and son, Logan Terry, daughter have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of cremation and a funeral. The page can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/funeral-arrangements-for-cathy-cathfish-terry. “We know times are really hard for all of us right now so if you’re unable to donate we just ask to keep our family in your prayers,” her daughter wrote on the site.
Terry was last seen the night of Nov. 29 in the Pine Island Community of Blountstown. Deputies canvassed the neighborhood, searched residences she was known to visit, reviewed surveillance video from several homes, and interviewed neighbors as well as clerks at stores she frequented without success. When an emergency GPS ping was sent out to her phone, it was found in at a trailer next to hers in the park at the boat landing.
