Investigators are trying to figure out who abandoned a battery-powered Tesla in the middle of a 16,000 track of hunting leases between Turkey Creek Road and Prison Road.
A lease owner who was on the property Monday came up on the expensive vehicle parked on a two-trail road in an area known locally as the Stokes Site.
As of Friday morning, the missing driver has not been found despite an intensive search by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, FWC Officers and the agency’s helicopter, as well as tracking dogs from Liberty Correctional Institution that began Monday night and continued through Tuesday afternoon. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office assisted, bringing in a helicopter with thermal imaging equipment, but no one was located.
“We’ve exhausted all our efforts in the search,” said Lt. Bobby Revell, but said they are following up on a few leads. “We’re doing our due diligence but none of this makes any sense,” he said.
They learned that the car was rented from a private company in Tampa. When investigators reached the company, an employee was able to remotely unlock the vehicle. They found the vehicle still in running order. Two phones were found inside.
Revell said they have “an idea” of who might have left the vehicle in the isolated spot and said the investigation is continuing.
