CALHOUN COUNTY – A back porch grill is thought to be the cause of the fire that destroyed a Calhoun County home Thursday evening.
Four people were at the two-story residence just off NE John G. Bryant Road in Calhoun County when the blaze started on Feb. 29. The Nettle Ridge Fire Department was paged out at 6:18 p.m. and on the scene in six minutes, where they found the home fully engulfed in flames. Crew members from the Blountstown Fire Department and Magnolia Volunteer Department also responded and assisted. The fire was under control in less than 15 minutes. Firefighters then began going over site and putting out all the hot spots.
Four people were in the home at the time and safely escaped the blaze. It is believed the blaze was started by a gas leak from a tank on the the family’s Blackstone grill.
Following the loss of their home, they family received assistance with food, shelter and clothing.
Among the few things that emerged intact after the fire was a plaque with a Bible verse, pictured below, as well as two family Bibles that remained safe in a drawer.
In addition to firefighters, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and Calhoun County EMS responded and assisted at the scene.
