Man charged stealing cigarettes

in Citgo break-in; Investigation

continues in recent armed robbery

BLOUNTSTOWN – A local homeless man is facing charges after deputies discovered him lying in the grass next to a Blountstown convenience store that had been broken into just two days earlier.

Corey Evan Guilford, 33, was charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure, petty theft and criminal mischief after he was identified as the man shown in a Citgo store surveillance video throwing a brick through lower panel of the front glass door, entering the building and then running out with an armful of cigarette cartons.

Guilford, who has a long arrest history, is believed to have been living in the woods around Blountstown.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was alerted of the break-in by a store clerk who discovered the damaged door after arriving for work around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, April 17.

K9 tracking units from both local prisons responded but were unable to establish a trail due to the time lapse between the 3:15 a.m. break-in and the discovery of the broken glass.

A well-placed store camera showed images of the suspect, identified as a white male with a white mask obscuring this face, throwing a brick through the door.  Guilford was wearing the same black and white plaid pants, brown t-shirt and red and black jacket on the day he was arrested that he was seen wearing in the security footage from two days earlier.

The investigation also led to the arrest of a second man – Robert Bailey Duggar – who investigators said traded approximately $10 of methamphetamine for one of the seven cigarette cartons stolen by Guilford.

In a message posted on Facebook, Sheriff Glenn Kimbrel stated, “The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to keeping our community and county safe. Acts, such as the ones committed by Guilford, will not be tolerated. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all individuals and agencies that help us achieve this goal daily.”

The investigation into an armed burglary that happened at the same store just four days earlier is continuing.  Investigators report that two black males, both wearing masks, entered the store Thursday evening.  One had a gun; the other, a knife.  After ordering the clerk to get behind the register and empty the money into a paper bag, they left with an estimated $950.   The two ran outside, got in a car and fled the scene.
