Seventeen new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Calhoun County with 11 documented for Liberty County, according to a report from the Florida Health Department for the week of Sept. 8 – 14.

The report, which can be found online at https://floridahealthcovid19.gov, shows that since March 1, 2020, a total of 5,134 cases of covid have been confirmed in Calhoun County.  Liberty County has reported 3,133 since documentation began over three years ago.  The site does not distinguish between new cases and repeat cases for those previously diagnosed.  The state site issues updates every two weeks.

Recent new recommendations from the Florida Department of Health have lessened the isolation time for potential patients although the arrival of cooler weather in the months ahead means the likelihood of more covid cases.

“If you’ve been exposed but have not tested positive, you don’t have to quarantine – just monitor yourself for symptoms,” says Calhoun-Liberty Health Department Director Rachel Bryant about the new directive from the state.  Of course, covid is not the only issue during colder temperatures.  “There’s a high chance of acquiring any kind of respiratory illness during the cooler months,” Bryant pointed out.

A new vaccine is expected to be released soon to combat the latest variants of covid.  Bryant said her office would be notifying the community as soon as it is available.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that is caused by a coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2, which was first identified in 2019. The virus is primarily transmitted from person to person through droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. Less often, a person might become infected with COVID-19 by touching a surface or object contaminated with COVID-19 virus and then touching their own mouth, eyes, or nose.
