BRISTOL, FL – A groundbreaking for the new Liberty County Jail was held Thursday, with Culpepper Construction employees joining county officials as they threw the first few shovels of dirt. The new facility will be built on the east side of Bristol off SR 20 at a site that once housed a juvenile justice facility.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a fiscally constrained community like Liberty County,” said Liberty County Clerk of Court Daniel Stanley about the $22 million legislative appropriation that made it possible. “The sheriff lobbied hard for it and the county commission took the iniatative, with everybody – including the School Board and City of Bristol – being committed to getting it done,” he said.
The current jail, which is part of the county courthouse, is the last county jail in the state that is attached to a public facility.
Construction is expected to take 14 to 18 months, with an estimated completion date of December 2025.
