Man arrested
after making a scene
at school crossing
and resisting officers

BLOUNTSTOWN – A man whose actions alarmed parents arriving to pick up children during Tuesday’s early release at Blountstown Elementary’s second campus is facing several charges after he fought off officers trying to take him into custody.
Mark Chambers, 56, of Blountstown, approached an officer who was busy directing traffic on Main Street shortly after noon. Chambers became belligerent and began cursing at the officer as students were leaving the area, according to the arrest report from the Blountstown Police Department. He then walked to a nearby store, where he was met by two other Blountstown Police Officers.
Chambers became defiant and told officers he was not going to be arrested. He grabbed a hammer from his tool belt and held it up. One of the officers unholstered his taser and ordered Chambers to drop the hammer.
He then raised his voice and asked the officers, “Do you want to die?” He repeated the threat two more times before throwing the hammer to the ground.
He complied when asked to remove a second hammer from his tool belt, putting it on the ground and then throwing it across the parking lot.
When one of the officers moved in to take him into custody, Chambers bit him on his right arm, leaving a bruise. A third officer arrived on scene and the three struggled to take the irate man into custody as he fought them, yelling, “I’m not going back to jail!”
When he broke free from two officers, Chambers backed up quickly and slammed the third officer into a wall.
The three got Chambers on the ground as he continued to fight. One officer was bitten on the arm several times before Chambers reached down and grabbed his crotch. The officer then hit Chambers to get him to let go. Chambers then started punching the officer in his head and upper torso, leaving a bruise near his ribcage.
As he was sitting on the ground, Chambers repeatedly threatened to kill the officer. Two officers were holding him down as a third tried to put him in handcuffs as he continued to resist.
Chambers was taken to the emergency room at Calhoun Liberty Hospital, where he was examined before being turned back over to the officers. Once again, he became combative when an officer started to handcuff him. He raised his fists to the officer and then begin backing away. Three other officers stepped in and got him handcuffed after a struggle.
He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and six counts of resisting an officer with violence.
