BRISTOL – Alvin Shad Jacobs, 88, of Bristol passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.

A lifelong resident of Bristol, Alvin was born on August 3, 1935 to Letha and Shad Jacobs.

Alvin graduated from Liberty County High School in 1954, where he was quarterback of the football team and pitcher for the fast pitch softball team.  Along with special friend and teammate, Carroll Revell, he never missed a chance to reminisce about the Bulldogs. Alvin continued his athletic endeavors by pitching slow pitch softball well into his forties.  Alvin remained a lifelong sports fan and “coached” from his recliner until his death.

After graduation from high school, Alvin landed a job as a heavy equipment operator.  This led to the establishment of Jacobs Construction Company which he owned and operated for over 50 years.

While his work ethic was undeniable, his family life was most important.  Alvin spent many happy days at Lake Mystic teaching his daughters and their friends to water ski.  When not at the lake, Alvin could be found “fishing” on the Apalachicola River which most likely meant “baiting” hooks and “taking fish off” for his girls.  Alvin remained passionate about fishing and spent many of his last days on the river.

Alvin was predeceased by his parents, his brother Kelly Jacobs, and his sister Eleanor Weeks.

He is survived by his daughters, Jill Carraway (Wilson), Joni Read (Donnie), Jina Willis (Daryl Carpenter); grandchildren Evan Carraway Kryder (Robert), Hali Barfield Bodiford (Matt), Hunter Shad Jacobs (Kendra), Riley Harriet Read, Summers Ann Read, Jessica Read Hobbs (Jordan), Paige Willis Tibbets (Charles), and Ryan Gregory Willis;  his brother, Lloyd Jacobs, and 10 great grandchildren. Alvin’s love for family and friends was endless. He was “Granddaddy” to many others including Gavin, Colton and Justin Butler and Doug Thomas and  “Uncle” Alvin to his many nieces and nephews.

During his final years, Alvin was blessed with many caring and loving people who enriched the remainder of his life, including  Ron Watson and his staff at Panhandle Rural Health and Primary Care, the Liberty County EMS staff under the direction of Melissa Peddie, Maria Parra, Brandon Barber, Shannon Posey, and Savannah Mercer.

Alvin will be remembered for his land clearing, dirt hauling and sense of humor.  To know him was to love him.

Graveside services will be held at Lake Mystic Baptist Church Cemetery at 10 am Thursday, Sept. 28.   In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the LCHS Fieldhouse Project c/o Liberty County School District, 11051 NW SR 20, Bristol, FL   32321.

Todd Wahlquist with Bevis Funeral Home is assisting the Jacobs family with their arrangements.
