WESTVILLE, FL – Dempsey Eugene (Gene) Buffkin, age 76, of Westville, passed away Oct. 8, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Gene was born May 20, 1948, in Pensacola to Thomas and Doris Buffkin.
As a child, he moved to Clarksville and then eventually to Birmingham, AL where he graduated from Jones Valley High School.
He enlisted in the United States Navy then had a successful career as owner of Gene Buffkin Upholstery, where he provided the most beautiful workmanship to his clients in Birmingham for almost 50 years. Later in life Gene decided to settle back in Florida where he had lived for the last nine years.
Gene was a remarkably simple, kind, and hardworking man who cherished all his family, especially his granddaughters. They all grew up being “Pappy’s girls.” He enjoyed the ocean, boating, and fishing, sharing his love of these with his children as they grew up. Being on the water was where he was happiest. He also enjoyed all things Auburn, especially Auburn football which he loved watching with his son.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter, Madison McManus, and his brother, Tommy Buffkin.
Left to cherish his memory are his spouse, Debbie Hughes; son, Captain Brent Buffkin (Leigh); daughter, Brandi McManus (Jason); granddaughters, Ashli Buffkin and Mackenzie McManus; siblings, Danny Buffkin, Brenda Morgan (Greg), Ricky Buffkin (Madonna) and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services to honor Gene’s life will be held on Saturday, October 12 at Adams Funeral Home in Blountstown, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. with a service to follow at 2 p.m. with pastor Mitchell Holsonback officiating. Interment will follow at Poplar Head Baptist Church Cemetery in Clarksville.
