ALTHA – Lottie Erlene Messer, 86, of Altha, passed away Friday, June 30, 2023, at her home.

Erlene was born January 22, 1937, in Marianna to the late Ernest and Mary Lou Mayo. She was a Certified Professional Food Manager and managed the Carr School Lunchroom for 30 years until her retirement. A dedicated member of the Glory Hill Holiness Church, she played the piano and taught Sunday School there. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, playing the piano and working with flowers. Her life was devoted to family, church and helping children, and visiting the elderly and sick at nursing homes.

Other than her parents, Erlene was preceded by her husband J. B. Messer; a daughter, Linda Gail Messer and her brothers, Daymon, Robert, Louie and Roy Mayo.

Survivors include her sons, Dale Messer, Sr. and his wife Geraldine and Jay Messer, Jr. and his wife Sherry of Grand Ridge; her daughters, Cindy Messer of Altha and Melissa Masters and her husband Pat of Altha; brothers, Marion Mayo and Laverne of Sneads and Obie Hall of Grand Ridge; her grandchildren, Celinda Gayle Roland (Wesley), Dale Messer, Jr., Katrina Griffin (Sam) Mekeysha Donnelly (Brian), Dawn Herring (Brad), Waylon Lewis (Kaye), Zachary Kirkpatrick, Elaina Fretwell (Jeremy), Keith Kirkpatrick (Joanna), Kegan Curran, Kayla Henson (Blake), Krystal Hansford (Brian), Tabby Braxton (Pat); great-grandchildren, Michael, Ryan A., Brad, Kaylee, Ember, Mikaela, Caitlin, Marti, Bryce, Emma, Ashley, Spencer, Sophie, Julian, Henry, August, Roman, Ryan H., Beckett, Asher, Connor, Raelann, Jax and Brooklann; her great great- grandchildren, Robert, Maverick, Allyson, KJ, Brantley, Wyatt and Mila and a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Special thanks to Emerald Coast Hospice and all their nurses and staff, especially Kelly and Bonita who have been there for us the last few weeks of her life.

Services to honor Erlene’s life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Mayo, Rev. Riley Adams and Rev. Trent Broome officiating. Interment will follow in Page Pond Cemetery near Altha.

A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday.
