Sidney Eugene “Gene” Free
BRISTOL, FL – Sidney Eugene “Gene” Free, 75, of Bristol passed away on Dec. 6, 2024. Gene was born on Aug. 7, 1949, in Altha to Sidney and Thelma Free.
After retiring from the United States Army, Gene moved to Bristol where he lived for 53 years. Around Liberty County Gene was involved in a lot of things. When he wasn’t working for United Insurance Company, he could be found serving as a Bristol City Commissioner, a Liberty County Commissioner, a Liberty County School Board Member, a Board Member for the Calhoun Liberty Credit Union, a member of the VFW, and a veteran’s service officer for Liberty County. Gene was also a member and deacon at First Baptist Church of Bristol.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and shooting billiards, but more than anything he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his wife Patricia Free of Bristol; son Greg Free and wife Donna of Freeport; grandchildren, Lane Free and wife Tori of DeFuniak Springs, Sydni Ann Free of Freeport; great-grandchildren, Samson and Jude Free; brother, James David Free of Blountstown; sisters, Sidonia Marie Deighton of Monticello, Linda Sable of Marianna, Sue Bowen of White Springs, brother -in-law Jack Gregory and wife Annie, sister-in-laws Sandra Barfield and husband Randy, Linda Clark, Marsha Stevens and husband Ronnie, Paula Hyde and husband J.W., Dorothy Hammock and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Dec. 12 at the First Baptist Church of Bristol. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. (ET) until service at 3 p.m. (ET). Memorialization will be by cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Peavy Funeral Home in Blountstown.
