Obituary – William Alexander Timmons
WILLIAM ALEXANDER TIMMONS
MILTON – William Alexander Timmons, 87, of Milton went to his heavenly home on Friday, May 26, 2023, after a brief illness.
He leaves behind a loving family and a legacy of charm, intelligence, wit and community service. Born and raised on the family tobacco farm in Gretna, William enjoyed the distinction of being a fifth generation Floridian, whose family’s history was richly steeped in Gadsden County.
After graduation from Gadsden County High School, William attended the University of Florida, where he received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture economics and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He then completed his first year at UF School of Law, but soon became smitten with the beautiful Joan Parker from Blountstown, his blind date at the 1958 Florida-Auburn football game. Married in 1959, they enjoyed 55 years of marriage and together raised four daughters, who inherited their parents’ spunk and zest for life.
William began a long career with the Florida Farm Bureau, beginning as a District Manager in 1960 and then assuming the role of agency manager of Santa Rosa County in 1967. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Army National Guard, retiring as a Captain. He was a well-respected community leader, serving as the charter member and first president of the Santa Rosa Sunrise Kiwanis Club; a youth Sunday School director and choir member at First Baptist Church; and a member of the Pensacola Junior College Board of Trustees. William loved spending time with his wife at the family camp off the Chipola River, cheering on the Florida Gators, bird hunting, and keeping up with his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His passing has created a deep void that will be filled by the many warm memories that his family holds dear and treasured stories that so many friends will continue to share.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Frances Parker Timmons; his youngest daughter, Frances Timmons Cooley; his parents, Samuel and Susan Johnson Timmons; his siblings Brantley Timmons and Anne Timmons Poppell; and his grandson Dexter Blackmon.
William is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Joni Timmons Harrison (George) of Tallahassee, Suzy Timmons Harris (Howard) of Winter Park, and Alexandra Timmons (Craig Blackmon) of Milton; six grandchildren, Parker Harris (Molly) of Winter Park, Tyler Harris of Winter Park, Grant Harris of Charleston SC, Payne Cook (Holley) of Crawfordville, and Hayes and Harper Joan Cooley of Milton; four great-grandchildren, Parker, Hughes, Larsen, and Hayes Harris all of Winter Park; a sister-in-law, Elsie Timmons of Gretna; a brother-in-law, Jim Parker (Beverly) of Blountstown; four nephews; and three nieces.
A visitation was held Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Lewis Funeral Home Milton Chapel. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Pine Memorial Cemetery, 11674 Highway 71 South in Blountstown at 10 a.m. CT
Active pallbearers were Parker Harris, Tyler Harris, Grant Harris, Payne Cook, Hayes Cooley, Tim Poppell, Sam Timmons, Brian Timmons, and Jake Parker.
Those wishing to make a donation in his memory may contribute to the Florida Baptist Children’s Home or a charity of their choice. The family is most grateful to the excellent, caring staff at Covenant Care Hospice, who so wonderfully cared for him and the family in his final days.
