announces partnership with Whirlpool
Corporation at Florida A&M University
TALLAHASSEE – Southern Scholarship Foundation announced a partnership with Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR) in support of students at its scholarship houses on the campus of Florida A&M University. Southern Scholarship Foundation opened three scholarship houses on the campus of Florida A&M University in 1997, and nearly 600 FAMU students have received rent-free housing over the years. Residents can remain in the houses for all four years of undergraduate studies, as well as during graduate school.
In 2020, Whirlpool Corporation created its multi-year racial equality and fairness pledge to establish a recruiting pipeline to employ interns and graduates. In addition to the partnership with Southern Scholarship Foundation, the company also announced a partnership with Florida A&M University / Florida State University School of Engineering. Whirlpool Corporation has committed to sponsor the housing of 51 Florida A&M University students studying diverse majors at the three scholarship houses on the university’s campus. Additionally, the company provided new ranges, microwaves, refrigerators, and laundry appliances for each of the three houses – 24 appliances total to enhance the residents’ living environment.
Residents of Southern Scholarship Foundation received direct invitations to participate in the company’s BUILD (Building Unity, Inclusion, Leadership & Diversity) Externship to boost business acumen through immersive and engaging activities with corporate professionals. “In addition to the benefits of rent-free housing, the foundation continues to build new and exciting opportunities,” explained Dr. Shawn Woodin, Southern Scholarship Foundation’s President/CEO. He added, “The foundation also offers free mental health counseling for residents and personal financial management workshops, all aimed at supporting the overall well-being of our residents. This new partnership adds to SSF’s expanding support.”

Southern Scholarship Foundation supports 453 students in 25 houses across the state of Florida. Annually, Southern Scholarship Foundation offers $5.9 million in savings for college students and their families through its cooperative living scholarship program compared to living in an off-campus apartment or on campus residence halls. Upon leaving the foundation’s rent-free, cooperative living program, approximately 78% of residents have no educational debt.
