ALTHA, FL – Altha High basketball gets ready to start a new basketball season. The Cats are coming off their fourth consecutive winning season (14-12) and will play in a pre-season tipoff with practice games against Freeport (Tuesday) and Nov. 16 vs Liberty County at 6:45 in Altha.

“This year’s varsity will be really young, but we do return five players that started a lot of games last season.”, commented Coach Jimmy Rogers, beginning his 8th season in Altha. “Brody Burch is a tremendous point guard (6″1 Junior) and could be a catalyst for this group. Mason Hill (6’6″ Sophomore) returns from last season in which he averaged 16.4 ppg and 19.2 rpg) and should be a force again inside. Mason’s game has really improved and he is a more complete all-around player. Aiden VanZant (5’11 Sophomore) returns and has added more to his game than just a 3 point shooter. His mid-range has really improved. Saxon Smith (6’1″ Sophomore) also continues to improve his overall game. Aiden Grover (6’2″ Freshman) gets better daily and will continue to get better with his work ethic.”

He added, “Will O’Bryan (6′ Sophomore) was competing for a starting position, but a broken foot keeps him off the floor until after Christmas break. Riley Rowe (5’6″ Junior) has the ability to play with his athleticism and continues to work hard. Joby Braden (6′ Sophomore) and Tripp Hill (6’2″ Sophomore continue to compete in playing time, but I would love to keep them on the jumior varsity.” continued Coach Rogers. Davaughn O’Bryan-Patterson (6’4″ Senior) has never played, but is working hard. Jacob Baez (5’9 Freshman) Cole Cauley (5’10” Freshman) and Jerry Anderson (5’6″ 8th grader) are all working hard and bring different attributes to the floor. The sleepers this season could be Ashaun O’Bryan (6’1 Freshman) or Cayden Jones (6’1 Freshman); both have great bodies and just need to learn the game, but I am excited for them.”
After the pre-season classic this week, the Cats will open their season Tuesday, Nov. 21 against Wewahitchka at home. Come out and support these young men.
