Changes made to Calhoun County’s oldest business
The last link to Calhoun County’s earliest commercial building was toppled this past weekend as the walls were knocked down and old bricks pushed aside to make room for parking spaces on Northeast Pear Street. The site, which is owned by Helping Hands and adjoins the thrift store run by the non-profit group, started out as C.C. Corbin Hardware in the 1920s and in more recent years, was the site of a dry cleaners. The Helping Hands board had been urged last year to seek a historic grant to restore the site but decided to move ahead with demolition this past week. The thrift store was closed over the weekend while the work was being done but is now back up and running.
