BRISTOL – An observant family member and a quick response from the Bristol Fire Department  (BFD) kept a fire from spreading through a Neal Subdivision home Friday evening.

A family on Fourth Street had just finished dinner and were in their back yard when they saw smoke filling up inside the brick home.  They called 911 and eight firefighters responded at 8:05 p.m.

“It looked like the stove caught on fire,” said Bristol Fire Chief Dale Hobby.  The  damage was contained to the wall, the back of the stove and a cabinet that held a microwave.  “We caught it pretty fast,” he said.  Firefighters set up large fans to pulled the remaining smoke out of the home and remained on scene until they were sure the fire was contained.

The family indicated they had problems with the stove earlier but were able prepare dinner.  Afterwards, they turned everything off and went out to the back yard.  A family  member later ran inside and saw flames coming from behind the stove.

The fire department was busy last week taking applications for smoke alarms to go in Bristol homes and have 300 on their list so far.   The smoke alarms, which have 10-year lithium batteries, will be installed by fire fighters.  Additional applications are available at Bristol City Hall.
