ALTHA – At Altha Public High School, you don’t need super strength or the ability to fly to be a superhero. Mrs. Becky Flaig understands that the power to nourish and feed children is a great responsibility and one that she embraces wholeheartedly as the school nutrition specialist.

While ensuring access to healthy meals is an important part of her role, Mrs. Becky is known by her students for the connection she forms with each of them. Greeting each with a warm embrace and singing happy birthday for the entire lunchroom to hear, Mrs. Becky fills both bellies and hearts.

For her selfless dedication, Mrs. Becky has earned the annual Florida School Lunch Hero award from No Kid Hungry Florida, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Dairy Council of Florida. Please join us this week in celebrating Mrs. Becky and all the everyday heroes in school cafeterias feeding the kids in Calhoun County and across our state.

Florida School Lunch Hero Week is an annual event hosted by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), No Kid Hungry Florida and the Dairy Council of Florida. During the month of April, these three organizations called on parents, caregivers, school nutrition staff, school employees and more to nominate individuals for the 2023 School Lunch Heroes Award.

This year over 400 nominations were received through the Florida School Lunch Hero Week website. FDACS then went through and selected the recipients internally. Throughout this week, five heroes will be honored throughout the state. Each of this year’s winners had multiple nominations describing their hard work and dedication to feeding Florida’s public school kids.

Five winners will be named Florida’s 2023 School Lunch Heroes and will receive the following prizes:

  • $2,000 cash prize sponsored by No Kid Hungry Florida
  • An Apple Watch sponsored by the Dairy Council of Florida
  • A prize pack from FDACS’ Division of Food, Nutrition and Wellness
  • Certificate of Appreciation and 2023 School Lunch Hero Trophy
