BRISTOL – A former Liberty County Jail correctional officer charged with having sex with an inmate withdrew his not guilty plea Monday as a preparations began for jury selection.

Shelton Turner, 58, of Quincy, pleaded guilty to two counts each of sexual battery and sexual misconduct with an inmate.  He was sentenced to serve six months in jail to be followed by sex offender probation.

That plea means he is a convicted felon, must register as a sexual offender and can never again work in corrections or law enforcement.

According to the investigation conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE),  Turner was assigned to the female detention pod at the Liberty County in February of 2022 when he forced an inmate to have sex with him in an isolated, unmonitored area of the jail.

The victim reported the assault to the next officer on duty and turned over DNA evidence from Turner.

The DNA, along with video evidence from the jail, resulted in the officer’s arrest.

He will serve his sentence in the Franklin County Jail.
