FOUNTAIN, FL –  A man who barricaded himself in a hole under his home was removed from the scene and later died after a six-hour standoff with deputies from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon.

Deputies responded to North Silver Lake Road in Fountain to serve a warrant for James Milton Brown, 40, who is one of  Bay County’s Most Wanted, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.  He was wanted on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

When deputies approached the home, Brown  – who was armed – went under the home,  dug a hole and refused to come out.

BCSO SWAT responded to the scene and negotiations were attempted. Tear gas was used to try and get Brown to come out, but he remained under the home.

When Brown pointed his long gun at deputies around 5:03  p.m., he was shot.

Brown was taken to a local hospital for medical care.  He late died of his injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation into the shooting, which is standard practice after an officer involved shooting.

The BCSO SWAT team has responded to the home with the Bearcat and Rook, equipment designed to protect law enforcement as they approach and make entry to a residence.
