James Marvin Brock Jr.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – James Marvin Brock, Jr. passed away on March 8, 2024, in Tallahassee at nearly 90 years old. He was born on April 18, 1934, to James M. Brock, Sr. and Mattie Lou Foxworth, in Calhoun County.
J.M. is survived by his wife, Carolyn Brock; his sons, James Norman Brock (Michele) and James Marvin Brock, III (Jamie); a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Christensen (Jared); a sister Myrt Mayne (Jim); a brother, Gene Brock (Paula); a sister, Melissa Hobbs; 18 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughters, Janyce Carol Brock and Dina Lynn Brock; six brothers, Earl, C.J., Roy, Hubert, Ben, and Billy Brock, and one sister, Neita Belle Johns.
As the oldest son in a large family, J.M. grew up helping his daddy on the farm. He enjoyed playing sports in school, especially football and basketball. After graduating from Altha High School in 1952, he spent one semester at the University of Florida, making him a Gator fan for life.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953, during the Korean War, and soon after began his military travels with three years in Japan. In the course of his Army career, J.M. received the Bronze Star in Vietnam for meritorious service in a combat zone, served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the director of the National Security Agency, and retired as a Sergeant Major in 1979.
He also graduated from the University of Maryland with a business degree in 1978. His civilian career that followed brought him to 41 total years of dedicated service to our nation.
Throughout his life, he loved to remember stories of the past, share jokes, play the guitar and sing, and keep records of family history through genealogy and photographs. He treasured visits with family and connected with grandchildren through his love of history, sports, music, and animals. Most of all, J.M. had a great love for the Lord and for his wife of 33 years, Carolyn.
The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 14 at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel, in Tallahassee. The funeral will follow at 12:00 noon. A graveside service will follow in Chattahoochee at 2:30 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his mother.
