GULF CO. – A head-on collision early this morning left two men from Wewahitchka in serious condition. Both vehicles were traveling on SR 22, near Past Time Drive at 5:42 a.m. in Gulf County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 19-year-old driver was traveling east in a 2011 blue Nissan pickup on SR 22. The second driver, 55, was westbound in a 2007 red Dodge pickup.
The younger driver crossed the center line into the oncoming lane, colliding with the Dodge pickup. The impact sent both vehicles into a spin with the Nissan coming to a stop facing south on the north shoulder of the road. The second pickup came to final rest facing east in the eastbound lane.
The younger driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The second driver was. Both were transported to area hospitals.
FHP Lt. Jason King is urging panhandle residents to be especially careful this week as two Bay County events are drawing a lot of traffic through the area.
“Bay County has the Air Force Thunderbirds Air Show and the Thunder Beach motorcycle event this weekend,” he said. He noted that a number of roads will be closed off in Bay County to accommodate the crowds for these activities.
“There will be increased traffic coming through Calhoun, Liberty and Jackson counties,” he noted. “Please look twice for motorcycles. We’ll see a lot of them coming through our counties this weekend.”
