BAY COUNTY, FL – A 23-year-old Port St. Joe man was killed Saturday when he drove into the path on an oncoming pickup truck on US 98, east of Research Road in Bay County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, the fatal wreck happened around 7 a.m. in foggy conditions.
The Port St. Joe driver was eastbound on US 98 when his Nissan Altima crossed the center line, entered the oncoming lane and hit a westbound Ford F150. The pickup truck driver was identified as a 69-year-old Panama City man. He sustained serious injuries.
The driver of an unmarked Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission vehicle that was traveling in front of the Ford F150 managed to swerve out of the way and avoided being hit.
The front right of the car hit the truck’s front left. After impact, the car traveled southeast into a ditch. The truck began rotating counter-clockwise until landing partially in a ditch and on the shoulder’s edge of the westbound lane of US 98.
The Port St. Joe was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver was transported to an area hospital by Bay Medical.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
The crash site scene was closed for a little over two hours.
Those assisting at the scene included Tyndall AFB Police, Tyndall AFB Fire Rescue, Bay County EMS, Mexican Beach Fire Rescue, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office and FWC.
