CALHOUN CO. – A man who was checking on property he owns in the Mossy Pond Community Sunday afternoon made a gruesome discovery when he stumbled upon the remains of a recently released prison inmate.
The body was found on a trail near NW Isoletta Lane, about 200 yards from a camper trailer where James “Jamie” Howard Black Jr., 39, of Marianna had been sleeping.
Investigators recovered a pouch near the remains that contained what appeared to be an ounce of methamphetamine. “The suspected narcotic has been turned over to the FDLE lab for testing,” said Captain John Scheetz of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. He said that the illegal substance may have contributed to his death.
His cell phone was found outside near the camper. It is being checked to determine his whereabouts prior to his death.
Black, who has ties to Calhoun County, was released from prison May 21.
It is not known how long he was at the scene in Calhoun County before his skeletal remains were found. No obvious injuries were apparent.
Since his recent release, Black had “stayed in different places, living here and there,” according to Scheetz.
His mother, who lives in Marianna, and the mother of his children, who resides in Calhoun County, were notified of his death Sunday evening.
The FDLE Crime Mobile Crime Lab and an investigator with the 14th District Medical Examiner’s were called to the scene.
“This case is still being investigated and more details will be released when that information becomes available,” according to the sheriff’s office. Anyone with information about James Howard Black Jr. is urged to contact the sheriff’s office or call Crime Stoppers if you would like to remain anonymous.

This is the worst written article I think I have seen in my life. Such a lack of respect, presumption, and dismissiveness over the loss of life. This man obviously has family and this writer lacks empathy and BASIC respect for the deceased and his family. Shame on you! Hopefully you will never have to walk a mile in this family’s shoes to learn how to offer basic respect and human -to-to consideration. Disgusting.
