BLOUNTSTOWN, FL – George Owen House, 101, died peacefully in his sleep on November 11, 2024, in Blountstown.

As a veteran of World War II and a bombardier who flew missions over the Pacific, it is fitting that he entered heaven on Veterans Day.

Owen was born in Georgetown, GA in 1923, was raised in Thomasville, GA, and lived most of his life in Blountstown.  He worked for many years as the Florida County Forester for Calhoun and Liberty counties. He  was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Lion’s Club.

He loved fishing, golfing, finding and making arrowheads, and playing penny-ante poker with his friends. For almost 60 years, he was a member of the couples’ poker club, which met every week. Owen enjoyed gardening, and in his later years, he farmed his five-gallon buckets of tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. Owen loved his family, and nothing pleased him more than to have his family visit. He also very much valued his visits from his friends as he grew older.

Owen had a gentle sense of humor and tried to bring a smile to the face of everyone he met. He saw the best in everyone, and he never had an unkind word to say to anyone or to say about anyone. He had many friends and made friends anywhere he went. In fact, he remained friends with members of his World War II squadron until just a few years ago, when his last friend passed away. He genuinely cared about everyone who crossed his path.

He is survived by his three children, Rebecca Sellers (David), Virginia Szarowicz (Dennis), and John David House (Jackie). He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Jennifer Hill, Katie Buchanan, Anna Edwards, Josh Bietenholz, Annie Jo Landers, and John David House, Jr.   and eleven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his good friends Nicole Butler and Betty Anne Cayson.

A memorial service will be held at Blountstown First Methodist Church on Nov. 16 at 11 a.m.. Visitation will be from 10 until 11.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Owen House Memorial Fund, Blountstown Methodist Church.

All arrangements are under the direction of Peavy Funeral Home in Blountstown.
