BRISTOL, FL – Gov. Ron DeSantis will be in Bristol Wednesday morning to deliver a special gift for Liberty County – a replica of the Liberty Bell which will remain on display at Liberty County High School.
A press conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 1, where the governor will make the presentation, according to Liberty County School Superintendent Kyle Peddie.
“The Liberty Bell replica has been on display in Tallahassee at the Florida Capital and will now make Liberty County its new home,” said Peddie. “I can’t think of a more appropriate place in Florida for it.”
The bell will be unveiled in special ceremony near the high school’s front office. Visitors are urged to use the student parking lot and then walk through the high school to get to the front office. Chairs will be set up for visitors.
The bell is modeled after the original Liberty Bell, which has long served as a symbol of American independence. Per Wikipedia, the original Liberty Bell was commissioned in 1752 and today remains on display outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
In its early years, the bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens to public meetings and proclamations, according to Wikipedia. It is likely that the Liberty Bell was among the bells in Philadelphia to ring on July 8, 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was first read to the public, although no contemporary account of the ringing exists.
